River Information

Red Deer River
Grade 2-3

A long medium volume run with numerous class II rapids and long flat stretches in between.  One significant class III ledge in the middle of the run, and some excellent playwaves in a II+/III rapid shortly after.  Difficulty and excitement fluctuate wildly with water level, which can go from 25 cms to 250 cms in a very short period of time.  Check the guage before running.  Low water is 30-60, medium is 60-90, and high water is anything above.  Not reccommended above 220-250.

Put In / Put Out

Suggested Put INs:

Go west of Sundre on highway 27 and turn left onto the coal camp road.  Follow for about 50 km, and turn left at the T-junction.  Follow up to the blue bridge.  Put in is anywhere around the blue bridge next to the Mountain Aire Lodge.

Suggested Take OUTs:

(coming from Sundre) On the coal camp road, where the pavement turns to gravel, follow it up and down two large hills.  The takeout is the campground serviced by the road turning off to the left at the bottom of the second hill.  For a longer day and 3 more class II/II+ rapids, take out at the campground serviced by the road on the left at the bottom of the first hill.
